چکیده

We consider economies with incomplete markets, production, and a given distribution of initial endowments. The main purpose of the paper is to present a robust example of an economy with only one firm and one good per state in which no production decision entails a constrained efficient outcome. In particular, the unique Drèze equilibrium is dominated by every other production decision. ∗We are grateful to Jacques Drèze for valuable comments and helpful discussions. We benefited from discussions with H. Polemarchakis. E. and H. Dierker would like to thank the Centre of Industrial Economics and the Institute of Economics, University of Copenhagen, for their hospitality. Financial support from both institutions is gratefully acknowledged. †Institut für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Universität Wien, Hohenstaufengasse 9, A-1010 Wien, Austria ‡Centre of Industrial Economics and Økonomisk Institut, Københavns Universitet, Studiestræde 6, DK-1455 København, Denmark

Competitive equilibrium of incomplete markets for securities with smooth payoffs *

Recently, there has been renewed interest about incomplete security markets. Hart (1975) provided an example of nonexistence of competitive equilibria for incomplete real securities, which are claims to commodity bundles. Given this finding, Duffie and Shafer (1985, 1986a, b) prove generic existence of competitive equilibria of incomplete real security markets. Husseini et al. (1990) Geanakoplo...

Working Papers Department of Economics University of Vienna Are Incomplete Markets Able to Achieve Minimal Efficiency?

We consider economies with incomplete markets, one good per state, two periods, t = 0, 1, private ownership of initial endowments, a single firm, and no assets other than shares in this firm. In Dierker, Dierker, Grodal (2002), we give an example of such an economy in which all market equilibria are constrained inefficient. In this paper, we weaken the concept of constrained efficiency by takin...

Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91125 Price Controls, Non-price Quality Competition, and the Nonexistence of Competitive Equilibrium

We investigate how price ceilings and floors affect outomces in continuous time, double auction markets with discrete goods and multiple qualities. Since competitive equilibria need not exist in markets with price contols, we investigated the nature of non-price competition and how markets might evolve in its presence. We develop a quality competition model based on matching theory. Equilibria ...

Price controls, non-price quality competition, and the nonexistence of competitive equilibrium

We investigate how price ceilings and floors affect outcomes in continuous time, double auction markets with discrete goods and multiple qualities. When price controls exist, the existence of competitive equilibria (the solution concept of classical market theory) is no longer guaranteed; hence, we investigate the nature of non-price competition and how markets might evolve in its presence. We ...

Efficiency and imperfect competition with incomplete markets

We deal with the problem of providing incentives for the implementation of constrained optimal outcomes in a two-period economy with incomplete markets. Allowing both for price observation, price-manipulation and a minimal amount of coordination enables to recover (second-best) efficiency at equilibrium, therefore to do better than perfect competition. To make this point, we construct a feasibl...
